1. Design and Structure:

   • Tube Material: E.T. tubes are generally made from medical-grade PVC (polyvinyl chloride) or other biocompatible materials that are flexible and durable.
   • Cuff: The cuff is an inflatable balloon, typically made from polyurethane or silicone, that encircles the distal portion of the tube. The cuff is inflated by using a syringe to ensure a tight seal within the trachea.
   • Connector: At the opposite end of the tube, there is usually a connector that can be attached to an anesthesia machine or a mechanical ventilator.
   • Size and Length: E.T. tubes come in various sizes to fit different patient populations. The size of the tube is determined by the patient’s age, weight, and the anatomy of their airway. The length is also adjustable based on the patient’s size.
   • Murphy Eye: Many E.T. tubes have a small side hole near the tip of the tube (called the Murphy Eye), which allows air to flow if the main opening becomes blocked, ensuring the patient’s airway remains open.

   • Cuff Inflation: The cuff is inflated to form a seal, preventing the tube from slipping out of the trachea and minimizing the risk of air leakage around the tube during mechanical ventilation. This also helps prevent aspiration, where stomach contents could enter the lungs and cause infection or respiratory complications.
